Inspired by nature, the artist Galatea revolutionized the process of pearl culturing in 2001 and produced the "Mercy Pearl". Not sure whether to call it a pearl or a gemstone - it is a combination of the two. It is created by inserting tuquoise beads into a black lipped oyster, causing the oyster to secrete nacre around the gemstone ( a natural defense mechanism when an irritant is present inside the oyster). After the pearl is harvested, the nacre is carved away revealing the gemstone beneath.
