Chlorine & Your Jewelry

Monday, June 18, 2018

It's officially pool and beach season here on the Crystal Coast and the first day of summer is just a couple of days away! We know that after packing your bags when you finally make to the pool you're ready to jump in and make a splash. However, it's important that you remove any valuable jewelry you have before making the jump. Chlorine and other chemicals found in pools can cause damage to your jewelry.

Chlorine can damage and discolor gold and platinum and contribute to erosion of the finish and polish of your gemstones. If you have gold jewelry that is 10 karat, 14 karat or 18 karat gold, it contains metals like copper, nickel, silver and zinc. The lower the karat gold of your jewelry, the more other metals it contains. These metals are high susceptible to damage from chemicals like chlorine. Although you may forget to remove your jewelry before taking a dip, it's important to be aware that just one exposure to chlorine will begin the damage process on your jewelry.

We've got some good news, too. If you're going to be swimming in a salt water pool, your gold jewelry will be fine! Just keep in mind that this type of pool may cause discoloration of your silver jewelry. Sunscreen and bug spray are also not good for your jewelry. Lotion can get into the crevices of your jewelry and even cause your jewelry to develop a dull appearance.

It's also important to have your valuable jewelry professionally cleaned and inspected occasionally. Keep your jewelry shining and beautiful as long as possible. Jewelers can check for loose stones, bent or broken prongs, and clasps which may need to be tightened. To learn more about taking proper care of your valuable jewelry or if your jewelry has been exposed to chlorine, visit our store in Emerald Isle or Morehead City today.
